Since I posted last weekend things have yet to settle down around here. Isaiah continued to spike fevers and his cough became very congested. This is all very unusual for him so I was concerned by day 6 of the fevers and not to mention he was pretty miserable :(. Took him to the drs and he was treated for bronchitis and he is finally feeling better.
Of course we didn't get off that easily, come on were are the Nault's... By wed. Avery spiked a 102 fever and started with a croupy cough. Never a good sign. However he looked great. I took him to the pediatrician and she gave him a strong antibiotic shot and ran lots of blood work. Surprisingly, things looked good and she was comfortable sending us home with oral antibiotics. Amazing!!!! Did you really think it was going to be that easy.... Of course not. We were able to at least enjoy our Thanksgiving meal but then things quickly went downhill from there. Avery became very congested and ended up spiking fevers overnight. So by this point it was time to bring him in. We drove him in and it was NOT pretty. By the time we got to the ER he was rushed to the trauma room and things got pretty scary from there. He was on high alert for intubation. We were transferred to the ICU of course and the attending told me he was pretty worried about Avery and that his threshold for intubation was very low. Needless to say, I didn't get much sleep that night.
At one point there was a Code Blue call on the unit and much of the staff assumed it was Avery and so did I for a minute. Very scary!!!! Thankfully, I have one tough guy and had a great nurse and respiratory therapy that did a ton to stabilize him overnight. He has been able to avoid intubation which is amazing considering he was just diagnosed with RSV. This is NOT a good diagnosis for a kid like Avery and certainly can be fatal. But like I said, my boy is a trooper. He is on continuous bipap on higher settings but doing well. He labs were not looking so good by Friday but have really improved since then. RSV is a long and nasty course and it peaks at day 5. I am hoping that started on Wed. (the first day he got the fever) since he seems to be showing signs of improvement. He is not out of the woods by a long shot but he is making some slow and steady progress. Just praying that he continues on this path and that our life settles at some point b/c I feel like I am going to lose my mind. Basketball season starts on Monday so what little help I was getting before is going to be even less. I think that Superwoman cape is going to have to be sewn on permanently.
