Avery ended up getting admitted. It is just so frustrating b/c I knew he did not have a line infection but b/c he spiked a temp while on the ER then there was no hope of going home. Of course the drs. did not buy this being a result of his IVIG. But his labs looked exactly how they did the last admission. His white blood count was down to 3 ( norm is 6-12), his platelets were low again, although his hemoglobin/hemocrit were normal.. He did look well so it was chalked up to another virus. I was certainly anxious to get out of there b/c I'm not used to being couped up there during the summer & they were not doing anything we could not do at home. Besides, it is the switch over of all the new residents and a time you would much rather be home, trust me....

We came home yesterday because his blood cultures were negative. They redrew his labs and I was told that only one value was elevated.  I asked for a printout just before leaving (I just started doing this). I was surprised to see that a ALL of his labs were worse than the day he came in. His white count had dropped (2.7) , platelets (from 100 to 86), h/h  (went from 33/11 to 29/10) and his potassium was high (4.85). Usually they will recheck the potassium bc there are usually false positives but surprisingly it was not rechecked. I'm sure they thought it was fine but you really never know.

So now I am obsessing over how he looks bc I know how fast he can go downhill when he needs a transfusion. He did not a great day today and I tried bipap but he fought it so hard and now he is on 4 liters of O2. He slept later than usual and was fussy today. You couldn't leave his side for even a minute. I just hope he improves on his own. I have also put a call into the immunology department to talk about pretreating him with different meds before his IVIG. He needs it but we have to have a better system in place to prevent these reactions on a regular basis.

On a positive note, our dog Milo will be coming next Friday. He had already been neutered and is doing great. Can't wait to meet him.  Then it's surgery time or me.  So lots going on in the next couple of weeks so Mr. Avery has to be healthy.

Wow, I can't believe that the docs weren't more concerned about the lab changes. I always try to get a copy of Samuel's labs before the doctors round...otherwise, I often get the same response...everything looks fine, and then I see the labs and freak out!

I hope that he is able to bounce back on his own.

Thinking about you all!
